The Language of Gaslighting

While gaslighting as a term originated in the psychological literature, its definitions tend to related to the affect of gaslighting not necessarily what gaslighting actually it. As a Linguist, I have set out to study the language that makes up what victims perceive as gaslighting.

  • Linguistic Definition

    “A form of (un)conscious psychological manipulation mediated through language by a person perceived higher power that has the effect of invalidating or denying the interlocutors’ reality or lived experience with the impact of discrediting them within a micro or macro context.”
